Referred to as 'James Toomer' by Ron Hockings & Scott Cheshire in earlier books but actuall named Walter Edward Toomer, he was born and raised in Southampton and educated at St John's College in Battersea where he trained as a teacher whilst playing as an amateur for both Fulham & Chelsea. Walter returned to his home town to take up a teaching appointment in 1906 and where he also continued his playing career with Southampton where he ultimately became a director in later life. He also assisted his father with the family sports outfitters business.
