Pending individual appearances being added to the database, this is the information from Peter Wollaston's reserve Team players book:

John Archibald was a goalkeeper who started his playing career at Albion Rovers before coming south to Reading, presumably prior to the first World War. In 1919 Chelsea signed him but he failed to make the first team and in June 1921 he was transferred to St. Bernard’s.

In the same year he made a single appearance for Newcastle United before moving to Grimsby Town in 1923 where, over the next three or four years, he was to play 111 games before finishing his league career at Darlington with a further 41 appearances. He then moved back north of the border to play for Albion Rovers, Airdrieonians and East Stirlingshire.
