Cecil Allan started his football career in Ireland, originally with Linfield Swifts before joining Cliftonville where he played for several years as an amateur, being an apprentice at Harland & Wolff as well. He joined Chelsea in March 1936 but in his debut match for the reserves he damaged his cartilage and never made the first team. However, in addition to the 13 Combination appearances, his name was in the proposed line-up of a further 9 Combination games.
Having a problem with his knee, he was transferred to Colchester United in June 1938 and was to play 16 matches for them in the period prior to and after the Second World War. On leaving them in 1946 Allan joined Colchester Casuals as captain and coach. He later worked in the sheet metal industry and managed the local works team. During the war he was a guest player for Dundela, Bangor and Crewe Alexandra.
Prior to joining Chelsea Allan had earned 1 full and 1 amateur cap for Ireland.
