Bobby was hired as assistant manager to Geoff Hurst in 1979, a position he held until the summer of 1981. When Hurst was sacked before the end of the 80/81 season, Gould took caretaker charge for the remaining 2 games of the season (defeats away at Swansea and home to Notts County).
He departed shortly after the end of the season and moved into management in his own right, taking charge of Bristol Rovers (twice), Coventry (twice), Wimbledon, West Brom, Cardiff City, and Wales to name a few.
